So for now we’re stuck with some words that will possibly (hopefully) fall out of use in the future. To sensibly answer such questions, we need to understand the core mechanism that makes a star luminous in the first place. Then we can use that understanding to better define what is or isn’t a star. Morning Star, Evening Star: Venus and the Moon

Then several weeks later it emerges back into view in the morning sky, rising before sunrise. Venus can sometimes be seen close to the western horizon shortly after the sunset. When it is on the other side of the Sun it can be seen for a while before sunrise above the eastern horizon, then it is known as morning star. Like all the planets, Venus does not shine, but reflects the light of the Sun.

Sometimes, for instance, we might see a bright planet like Jupiter shining brilliantly just above the eastern horizon in the evening. Within an hour or so, it has climbed well up into the eastern sky. The giant planet is thus ideally situated for observations of its changing cloud bands and four big Galilean moons for much of the night. Originally, the terms “morning star” and “evening star” applied only to the brightest planet of all, Venus. It is far more dazzling than any of the actual stars in the sky and does not appear to twinkle. The fact that Venus was a wandering star soon became obvious to ancient skywatchers, who noticed its shifting back and forth from the early hours of the eastern morning sky to the western sky in the early evening.

That limit isn’t well defined, but it’s somewhere in the neighborhood of 200 times the mass of the sun.
